The Gardener's Picnic

Nichols spent several days in Seattle making a display garden. The theme, derived from a watercolor by Marci Hawthorn, depicts a fanciful place setting in the garden. On a blue checked table cloth is a place setting with gardeners trowel, fork and glove. Nasturtiums in the background and some snails crawling over the plate. The salad circle in the center is an example of patterned gardening using edibles. At the left of the back yard porch hangs a dwarfed apple tree. Near the garden gate is a small rabbit hutch with two flop eared bunnies. Watching them are two abstract sculptures representing children. In the yard are several pots of citrus trees, a tea plant, and bay tree. Nasturtiums cascade from below the open window. On the side of the garden is a hedge of red stemmed blueberry bushes. Surrounding the garden is a stone wall with aromatic herbs in cedar boxes.
